- The Basics 🥛
Whether you’re making a birthday cake, loaf of bread, or a batch of cookies, most of the ingredients are the same. Let’s focus on a basic cake as an example. Take a look at this list of ingredients, along with some healthier alternatives. You can substitute any in equal measure. Flours: Flour is like a foundation, holding all the ingredients together. Not all flours are the same; some are just for bread while others are good for cake. Almond, oat, and teff flour are healthier alternatives. Leavening Agents: Leavening agents make treats light and fluffy. The most common ones are baking powder, baking soda, and yeast. None of these are really unhealthy, but yeast is the most natural. Fats: Butter, oil, shortening, and margarine bring good texture and strong flavor. You can substitute these with avocado oil, canola oil, and more. Sweeteners: There’s a reason we all love sugar, but there are healthier options out there. Honey and maple syrup are some of the more natural options. You’ll also need water, milk, eggs, and something for flavor. The list never ends, but knowing what alternatives are available will help you be creative later on 💪
- Techniques 🍰

You’ll pick it up as you go. If you’re ready to add more words to your baking vocabulary, grab a nearby cookbook and read through the directions. Look up any terms you don’t know.
- Other Tips 🥧
Before you make your first healthy cake, there are a few extra tips to keep in mind. First, don’t be afraid to try something new. Healthy alternatives are out there! Make sure your oven is preheated before you put in your mixture. Many treats need that first zap of heat to bake just right. When measuring, don’t pack down the ingredients. Just fill to the top without forcing. Finally, stay organized. Do you have everything you need for a recipe? Read the instructions beforehand to make sure.
- The Tools 🍪
You can buy tons of fancy gadgets, but there’s really only a handful of tools you need in order to make a basic cake, including: An oven and cake pan Measuring spoons and cups Whisks, spatulas, and other utensils Bowls and pans There are a ton of options out there, so choose sets that are long-lasting and comfortable for you to use. Whether you’re splurging on a ton of sugar or trying to stay healthier, it’s important to be comfortable with all these gadgets. Try buying smaller trays and bowls to limit your portion sizes.
- Decorating 🎨
As the saying goes, we eat with our eyes, and making your cake look tasty is just as fun as the baking itself. Check out different tools online or at your local baking store. Play around with different icings and chocolate molds, and invest in piping tips to make stars, flowers, and other shapes. When decorating, remember: If you’re using icing, wait for the treats to cool. Use fresh fruit for a healthier decoration. Sometimes less is more. Too much decoration can hide the taste. - 🧵 URLs
The URLs that you use for your site are just as important as the words everywhere else on the screen. Which URL looks better to you? www.website.com/filename7/iewjiqoq_infsjdfh www.website.com/productname/details The second one is clear about what that page will show. Think of URLs like a thread running through the site, showing people exactly where they are and where they came from. Go through your website and make your URLs as clear as possible. Use those keywords, too, to let Google know what it’s all about.
- ✍️ Design
If your site doesn’t look good, people won’t stay for long. Every page of your site needs to have: A design that is clear and attractive Written content that is informative and enjoyable No need for over-the-top design or a ton of content. Just keep it simple, clean, and easy for people to find what they’re looking for. Go through each page of your site and see what can be improved.
- 🚧 Link Building
The more places that are linked to your site, the more important Google thinks it is. Link building means making sure that you have: Links within your site that connect pages in a clear way; and Links on other sites that encourage people to visit yours. Make sure that people can easily get around your site without becoming lost or confused. If there’s a page on your site that is super important, have your other pages link back to it. Links on other websites are called external links. Everytime a link to your site is shared on social media, blogs, or other websites, Google takes that as a cue that people are interested in your site. Flooding your site with a million links won’t help anyone, and neither will trying to get your site listed on a bunch of random places. Instead, make your site easy to get around, and create real connections in online communities.
